How to brew ginger beer

Science of fermentation

Method

Equipment:

  • Ginger
  • warm water
  • Yeast
  • Cup
  • Spoon
Instruction:

  3. Half fill the cup with warm water
  4. Add 1 teaspoon of yeast
  5. Mix it all together
  6. Leave it to ferment for 6 days.
  7. After 6 days, taste it
Result:
Taste: Bad, smell bad

Discussion:

What is fermentation? the chemical breakdown of a substance by bacteria, yeasts, or other microorganisms, typically involving effervescence and the giving off of heat.

What is the best conditions for brewing? For example, typical American ale yeasts prefer a temperature of between 68 and 73 degrees Fahrenheit. "Fermenting at higher-than-recommended temperatures will typically cause the yeast to create more esters, leading to fruity aromas and flavors that may not be appropriate," Cohen says.

What is different of beer, wine, vodka, whiskey? Beer and whiskey are made from fermented grains. Whiskey id distilled to concentrate the alcohol; beer is not. Wine is fermented from fruit, mostly grapes. ... If wine is given a second fermentation in the bottle, you get sparkling wine.

Red Cabbage Indicator

Aim: I want to find out how red cabbage can tell if a liquid is an acid or a base.

Research:

Method:

Equipment:

  • Red cabbage
  • Beaker
  • Cup

Instruction:
  1. Wash your hands.
  2. Get your equipment.
Result:

Discussion:
What is an acid and base? The Arrhenius definition is the simplest, and states that acids are compounds that increase proton concentration in solution, while bases are compounds that increase hydroxide concentration in solution. Arrhenius acids will always contain hydrogen and Arrhenius bases will always contain hydroxide groups.

What do chemical indicators do? chemical indicator, any substance that gives a visible sign, usually by a colour change, of the presence or absence of a threshold concentration of a chemical species, such as an acid or an alkali in a solution. The common application of indicators is the detection of end points of tit rations.

  7. If there is to much baking soda add more citric acid, if there is to much citric acid add more baking soda
  8. If it doesn't taste good add more Raro
  9. (options) Keep it. Probably don't keep it for to long
  10. (options) Let your friend taste it
 Results:
I didn't get a photo so I am just gonna explain my experience

My one taste so bad and it burn in my mouth, also the other one were taste so good. This is all of the taste I experience it's sour, sweet, normal.🥰🥰

Discussion:

Why did the sherbet not foam on the paper but it did in your mouth? Because the sherbet is dry, and it need to be wet do foam. If the sherbet is not wet it will not foam cause it's still dry, the sherbet need to water to foam and in the mouth a bet of water make the sherbet to foam.

What was the chemical reaction in the sherbet? The fizzing sensation experienced when eating sherbet is a result of the chemical reaction between the citric acid and sodium bicarbonate. This reaction also produces small bubbles of carbon dioxide but only when the dry ingredients are wet by saliva in the mouth.

What type of chemical reaction is this? A Neutralisation

Discussion:
How do you taste food:
The taste buds pick up clues about how food tastes and send messages about it to your brain along special wires called nerves. To taste something properly, you need to chew food into small pieces and have a lot of drool, or saliva. This helps the flavor molecules (also known as “tastants”) reach your taste buds.
What are the different taste buds of our tongue: Taste buds contain the taste receptor cells, which are also known as gustatory cells. The taste receptors are located around the small structures known as papillae found on the upper surface of the tongue, soft palate, upper esophagus, cheek, and epiglottis.
Does smell affect your taste:
Our sense of smell is responsible for about 80% of what we taste. Without our sense of smell, our sense of taste is limited to only five distinct sensations: sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and the newly discovered “umami” or savory sensation. All other flavors that we experience come from the smell.

Eating Hot Chilli

Aim: I want to find out how get rid of the hot chilli off my tongue.

Research:

Method:
Equipment:
  • Popsicle stick.
  • Chilli
  • Water
  • Coca-Cola
  • Milk
  • Timer
  • Cup
Instructions:
  1. Get your equipment.
  2. Scoop some chilli on onto your stick.
  3. Start the timer and eat the chilli.
  4. Stop the timer after four minutes.
  5. Rate how hot your mouth is.
  6. Do experiment again but drink water after two minutes.
  7. Do experiment but drink coca-cola after two minutes.
  8. Do experiment but drink mick after two minutes.
Results:

First one without water 1/10 spice
Second one with water 0/10 spice
third one with coca-cola 0/10 spice
Fourth one with milk 1/10 spice

Discussion:

Why does chilli burn your mouth? Hot peppers contain an alkaline, oil-based molecule called capsaicin, which sneakily trigger the temperature-sensitive pain receptors in your mouth even though the molecule itself doesn't produce heat or cause any real damage

Why does milk reduce the burn? Many milk-based products contain a protein called casein, the casein can help to break down those capsaicin. The capsaicin is the chilli, the milk can get rid of the burn because milk have casein the get rid of the burn.
